Heart of the Home: The Family Room

Throughout the years I have come to love designing family rooms, because it’s the one room that everyone congregates to (other than the kitchen) and it is essentially the heart of the home. Its the place where everyone comes together to spend quality time, whether it be with friends or family.

Family rooms can be a challenge to design, depending on the size and needs, but it also is an opportunity to be very creative whether it’s minimal or being completely maximized. Aiming to make this room highly functional and comfortable, I design it without sacrificing style. A great sofa upholstered in a textural fabric is a must, layered with lots of cozy pillows and throw blankets. In addition to a fabulous area rug that pulls everything together. Wall coverings are a fantastic way to make a large (or small) spacer feel warm and inviting, especially textured ones such as grasscloth.

Most people spend lots of time in their family room and on these pieces of furniture, so it is crucial they are a reflection of the client and their lifestyle. While every designer is unique in designing each space, I do know that I try to understand each client on a deep level, which allows me to create an environment that is totally unique to his or her needs. Whether it be a city bachelor pad or a family home, there is great thought behind each design element.
